AD and eye health

Adults with atopic dermatitis may also experience eye issues

Research suggests that people with atopic dermatitis (AD), the most common form of eczema, may develop certain eye diseases.

AD and eye health

The American Academy of Dermatology recently shared some information on this topic, and reported that individuals with AD can develop symptoms on their eyelids and around the eyes, leading to itchy, red, swollen skin. They may also be more susceptible to certain eye conditions as well.

ESC asked dermatologist Dr. Mark Kirchhof MD, FRCPC, about the risk of eye issues and AD. He tells us:

“People with AD are at a higher risk of experiencing issues with their eyes. These not only include symptoms like itching and dry skin, but may experience other diseases – called comorbidities – as well. Examples of these include conjunctivitis (also known as pink eye), keratitis (inflammation of the cornea), or keratoconus (changes in the shape of the cornea).” He adds: “We are still learning about the link between eye disease and AD, but research suggests frequent eye rubbing, side effects from certain medications, and genetics may be contributing factors.”

Be sure to speak with your dermatologist if you experience any eye symptoms or changes to your eye health, and regular eye exams are important for everyone, and especially important for AD sufferers.
