ESC asked Dr. Rachel Asiniwasis about vitamin D and eczema
Vitamin D is an important nutrient. Our bodies need vitamin D to help absorb calcium and it plays a role in building and maintaining bone strength. Vitamin D can also help regulate other cellular functions, and is reported to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties that support our immune system, muscles, and brain. Given this, there has been recent interest in exploring the impact of Vitamin D supplementation to help ease symptoms of eczema.
ESC raised this question with Canadian dermatologist Rachel Asiniwasis, MD, FRCPC who shared her expertise: “While there has been some observational research in the past that has shown a link between low vitamin D and eczema, this research is now considered outdated. In recent years, peer-reviewed medical literature has concluded that the evidence of a link is weak, and essentially more information is needed before recommendations are made for vitamin D supplementation to help eczema.”
Dr. Asiniwasis added: “If you are concerned about whether you have general vitamin D deficiency, it is recommended that you speak with your doctor directly.”
ESC suggests that you speak with a qualified health care professional before starting any new medications or treatments, especially if they relate to eczema.
