Peri’s eczema story
“It will get better, and it can take time. Keep being strong, you will get through this”
These words are shared by fellow eczema sufferer Peri D., who reached out to ESC to share her eczema journey, and her words of advice and support for those in need.
“I’ve had eczema as long as I can remember. When I was a child and a teenager it was mostly mild experiences on the inner bend of my elbows and other small spots on my arms. That all changed when the pandemic hit Canada and the world. In weeks, my eczema went from mild to overwhelming pain, itch, and burning.
I knew I had to change my life if I wanted to feel better. I stopped wearing make-up, changed my moisturizers, face wash, body wash, hair products, and laundry detergents. I changed my clothes and sheets to 100% cotton, or other organic materials. I reduced my alcohol consumption. And I went to my family physician, even if it was just on the phone because of COVID-19. I was officially diagnosed with moderate-severe atopic dermatitis and started a new prescription treatment plan.
Not only my physical body changed, also my self-confidence and attitude towards life changed. I knew my body was different and I wanted my old skin back. It took me a year and a half to find a combination of medications to live a comfortable life, and I am still trying different things to manage my symptoms.
After becoming more educated about eczema, my symptoms have reduced. I no longer experience flare-ups to the same degree or as often. It is not something that came easily or quickly. I have grown to accept my new skin for what it is and adapt to these changes in my life.
I also found the Eczema Society of Canada’s educational resources helped “break the ice” on my eczema journey. Once I started routinely going to the doctor and getting an appointment with a dermatologist was I able to find adequate medications and skin care routines. I am very fortunate to have a family physician that is empathetic and makes me feel heard.
My advice is it will get better, and it can take time. Keep being strong, you will get through this.
