Tanya’s Tips –
4 key eczema management strategies that made a difference

Eczema Ambassador Tanya shares her tips that help her skin

ESC eczema ambassador Tanya shares her effective strategies for managing moderate to severe eczema. After facing the challenges of this condition, Tanya dedicated herself to finding ways to reduce its impact and make her life more manageable. Through trial and error, she identified four key areas that have helped her improve her eczema.

  1. “I use the treatment exactly as prescribed
Topical medications were the primary treatment prescribed in my childhood into adulthood. Because eczema is a chronic disease, there are ebbs and flows of flares. My topical treatments worked well if I used them correctly and if I used them as prescribed to help reduce the symptoms and extend the time between my flares. Sometimes, I could skip applying them, and then, of course, they didn’t work. Working with my dermatologist to manage the condition and sharing my perspective has been key.
  2. I’m skin-focused even when I’m not in a flare
“I have to keep up with the protocols and regimen. It isn’t just about prescription creams or treatment. It’s about moisturizer, limiting irritants, and constantly managing and keeping up the routine even when you’re not in a flare.
  3. I support my mental health
A turning point for me was recognizing that eczema is a chronic condition and not something that would go away on its own. I realized that eczema is more than just dry skin. There are physical, mental and emotional impacts on my quality of life. Realizing this led to a decreased level of stress and anxiety. Being able to share the struggle was the most helpful for me. Connecting to a community also helped me rally around myself and not feel so isolated. I could sit with my challenges and pain and understand that there will be times when things will feel good.
  4. I’m letting go
I learned to let go of the fragrances and allergens that might be contributing to my eczema, not causing but contributing to the excess irritation. I did a deep dive into that. The products that I was using. That was very helpful for me.”

For those who are newly diagnosed with eczema or have been long-time sufferers, there is hope. Eczema treatment and tips aren’t a one-size-fits-all. But there is help, and you can find your best skin.
