New treatments for atopic dermatitis: insights from Dr. Marni Wiseman

With a number of new treatments for atopic dermatitis (AD) being approved, ESC interviewed Dr. Marni Wiseman, a dermatologist and researcher from Winnipeg, Manitoba, about what this actually means for the eczema community, the hope it brings the community, and why it’s a good time to go back to the dermatologist if you’re living with uncontrolled AD.

With new eczema treatments being approved, what does this mean for eczema patients?Dr. Wiseman tells us: “AD is typically managed with appropriate bathing, the use of moisturizers to soothe dry and itchy skin, and lifestyle modifications such as trigger avoidance. Topical medications are commonly prescribed to help manage inflammation. However, some patients do not find relief from the typical management strategies, and for some the suffering, pain, and discomfort can be intolerable.”

“When topical treatments do not adequately manage the condition, or when AD is widespread, a dermatologist may recommend a systemic medication for patients. There are many new systemic medications coming to Canada, and some have already been approved,” adds Wiseman.

The question of how to best treat your or your child’s AD is a conversation patients and caregivers should have with the physician or a specialist, such as dermatologist. There are more choices now than ever before, so don’t give up hope that there may be new options that can help.

Eczema Society of Canada thanks Dr. Marni Wiseman, MD, FRCPC, for her volunteer contribution to this educational content.
