Ointments vs. creams: Which Is better for moisturizing eczema?
Are ointments better than creams when it comes to moisturizing? What is the difference between the two?
It essentially comes down to water content. Ointments are typically oil-based, and can sometimes feel greasy, whereas creams are typically water-based and generally absorb more quickly into the skin. So, which one is better for eczema?
In a recent webinar with Toronto-based dermatologist Marissa Joseph, MD, FRCPC, she shared this advice: “Ultimately, the best moisturizer for eczema is the one that you are willing to use often enough to maintain your skin’s moisture. Consistency and frequency are key, so opt for products that feel comfortable and that you don’t mind applying.”
Remember, keeping moisture in your skin helps keep irritants out of your skin, meaning that good moisturizing practices can have a big impact on your eczema symptoms. Here are a few more tips when it comes to moisturizing:
- Shortly after bathing or showering, apply moisturizer all over slightly damp skin to seal in moisture.
- Avoid products that contain dyes or fragrances, as these ingredients are more likely to cause irritation.
- You can make your moisturizer easier to apply by warming it between your hands before rubbing it onto your skin.
- If the moisturizer feels a little sticky on your skin, don’t remove this excess – you should allow it all to be absorbed into your skin over time, which shouldn’t take more than a few minutes.
- If you have hand eczema, try to apply a moisturizer every time you wash them or after they’ve come into contact with water.
