From Pain to Progress – Dana’s Eczema Journey

Dana

From enduring the discomfort of eczema flares to finding relief, Dana’s story is a testament to the resilience of a young woman. Her journey, marked by her battle with eczema, is a source of inspiration for other eczema warriors. Here, Dana shares her journey with eczema.

“Growing up with eczema, I was told countless times that I would outgrow it and that it would completely disappear around the age of sixteen. While that kept me hopeful, it was frustrating whenever a flare-up happened. It seemed that things were only getting worse.

A pivotal moment in my journey occurred in 2019 – the worst flare-up I had ever experienced. I was fifteen years old. I had fresh, open wounds all over my arms and legs. I couldn’t walk straight; the wounds behind my knees made it difficult to, and even just stretching or straightening my legs caused excruciating pain. I would cry in the shower because even that simple daily task was a huge struggle. People tend to overlook how this skin condition affects daily life and impacts both physical and mental health.

Since childhood, I have been prescribed topical and oral steroids, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial creams, and ointments. You named it, and I’ve tried it. I have also undergone phototherapy since age ten. These treatments were crucial in managing flare-ups and helping me find relief.

Now, at nineteen, my eczema is still evident but manageable with my current treatment regimen, and it’s a lot better than before. I no longer have rough, thick patches on my knees or anywhere else. I don’t spend all night scratching, and I don’t bawl my eyes out in the shower.

I told myself that I would never endure a flare-up that severe again. The pain I’ve experienced has motivated me to take action and make progress with myself – understanding my skin and learning to manage it better. I made lifestyle changes and am now more conscious of what I eat. I’ve also developed mental fortitude, knowing that a strong mind can overcome challenges. Of course, I couldn’t have done it without my dermatologists’ help, my friend’s encouragement, and especially my family’s unwavering support and care. (A special shout-out to my teachers, who were also incredibly understanding and supportive!)

I was inspired by those who bravely shared their stories. When we collaborate and uplift each other, we make progress, a change that leads to better lifestyle management and mental health support. I am grateful to Eczema Society of Canada. ESC’s dedication to eczema awareness and support aligns with my dreams for the community, allowing us to work towards a common goal.

No matter the state of your skin — dry and flakey, red and swollen, or calm and clear — remember that your state of mind plays a significant role in your healing journey. So, things get better, even if it may not seem like it. You know how good your skin can get! You’ve come so far! Your body is strong, but your mind is stronger. You are a warrior!”

Standing strong with you,

Dana”
