As a teen living with severe eczema, William found strength, balance, and success.

William’s journey with eczema has been marked by highs and lows, flares and more flares. Yet through it all, he stayed focused on excelling in school, competing as a second-degree black belt in taekwondo, and determined not to have his life defined by the eczema.
“I’ve always had sensitive skin. It has been part of life for as long as I can remember. It wasn’t until grade 9 that it really started to affect my daily life. It became very uncomfortable for me to be in my own skin.
I focused on my passion, taekwondo. As a second-degree black belt, you have to move your body in different ways. There were parts of my skin that were so dry. It was tough for me, especially during partner training and competitions. I’d be sparing with someone, and if I moved or someone hit an open sore, my uniform would become stained with blood.
Even when times were difficult, I tried to stay positive. I’ve always been the person that people at school will come to if they’re struggling, especially with skin stuff. They know I’ve struggled with my skin and can understand what they’re going through. I’d be so confused when people would tell me they had eczema. Their eczema was nowhere near the flares that I would have.
After years of trying different medications, I tried a biologic. I was nervous to inject myself, but then I got into the routine. It was incredible to see the progress on my skin. My skin and life have changed so much. I am forever grateful.
Even through the challenges with my eczema, I was very determined. My hard work paid off when I secured a spot on the Canadian Taekwondo Team for the 2025 ICTF Open World Taekwondo. I left the competition with one gold and two silver medals. I’m proud of my hard work.
I hope others with eczema know that they don’t have to suffer. There is support and help out there.”
