Products that are identified as ‘Accepted’ have earned the ESC Seal of Acceptance, which means the product may display the Seal of Acceptance on their product packaging and in their marketing materials.1 Accepted products undergo thorough testing and review and are either free from known irritants or are formulated with ingredient concentrations that have been found to be generally suitable for use with sensitive skin. Products are eligible for the ESC Seal of Acceptance if the product was created or is intended for use by persons with eczema and/or sensitive skin conditions; specific testing has been conducted on the product and the related data is provided for review; information about the product’s formulation and samples of the product are provided for review; and the product meets the requirements of applicable Canadian law.
A product that meets these eligibility requirements undergoes ESC’s formal review process to determine if the product meets the acceptance criteria. The product’s ingredients and formulation, the submitted clinical testing data, the product’s name, the related packaging and marketing materials, and the product’s potential to cause harm or confusion to consumers are all reviewed to determine if the product is generally either suitable for, or well tolerated by, individuals with sensitive skin or eczema.2

Products that have earned the Eczema Society of Canada’s Seal of Acceptance may contain potential irritants at concentration levels thought to be insignificant for most individuals. Some people with eczema may still find they do not tolerate certain products or certain ingredients. Rarely, some individuals will have an allergy to specific ingredients that are well tolerated by others.
ESC recommends that individuals patch test any new personal care product on a small area of skin before applying it to a large area of skin; cleansers, however, should never be left on the skin. Should irritation occur, ESC suggests that individuals not use the product and consult their healthcare professional.
For over-the-counter (OTC) products, ESC reminds consumers that all drugs, including OTC drugs, have risks and potential side effects. Consumers are reminded to read and follow the manufacturer’s and pharmacist’s instructions and consult with their healthcare provider before using any medication, and if their skin is worsening during or after use.
